Carter Young

Carter Young is the label of founder and creative director Carter Altman, and it takes a different view of Americana. Instead of New York and LA, Altman looks to the often overlooked flyover states of the Midwest, finding beauty in the strip malls, industrial estates and suburbs of his Detroit youth. He calls it New Americana, and it's made for real life rather than the runway. Each collection starts from a single reference, such as a photo, a song or a film, and the research shows in the result. Expect American staples reworked with a sharper eye: boxy jackets, worn-in tees and Western shirting. Wherever possible, the label uses natural fibres and deadstock fabrics, which keeps things small-scale and low-impact.
