MHL. by Margaret Howell is the sub-brand of the British designer's mainline label, founded in 2004. It began as a look at workwear's tougher side: sturdy cottons, no-nonsense stitching and details that earn their keep. Coarser threads, bar-tacks and corozo brace buttons form the backbone of the clothes, though Howell's refinement softens the edges. The result sits between utility and modern simplicity, with pieces that feel lived-in from day one. Fabrics include cotton twill, cotton poplin and Japanese denim. The idea is to turn everyday garments into essentials built for longevity and ease, and to celebrate the beauty of function. Margaret Howell herself has designed since 1970, starting with men's clothes.
