Champion started in 1919, when the Feinbloom brothers set up a sportswear company in Rochester, New York. They were fed up with the inconsistent, makeshift quality of kit at the time, especially for American football. Early sales went straight to college teams such as Michigan State, and students soon followed. The brand is also credited with the hoodie, first made as hard-working athletic wear for colder climates. Reverse Weave is the line to know. The heavyweight fabric is woven crosswise to resist vertical shrinkage, with a soft, brushed inside for warmth. The Made in USA range, stocked by Son of a Stag, uses heavier fabrics and traditional cut-and-sew construction, in crewneck sweatshirts and long sleeve tees.
