New Balance

New Balance started in Boston in 1906, making arch supports. Early on, William J. Riley created a three-point insole inspired by the way hens balanced on their feet, and comfort has stayed the focus since. Since 1982 the label has made trainers in Flimby, Cumbria, as part of its Made in UK line. Expect suede and mesh, numbered rather than named models, and a good deal of grey. The 990, 9060 and 574 are among the signature pairs, with Fresh Foam and FuelCell for performance running. There is also a Made in USA program under Teddy Santis, plus clothing from running gear to gym tops and shorts.
