Sanders

Sanders is a Northamptonshire shoemaker with a long paper trail. Brothers William and Thomas Sanders set up in Rushden in 1873 with five craftsmen and a small town-centre workshop. The factory moved to Spencer Road in 1912, and during the First World War it was turning out almost 6,000 pairs of army boots a week. A fire in 1924 destroyed the factory, yet the firm carried on. Today it is still family-owned and still on Spencer Road, making shoes and boots in England, with derbies and welted leather at the core. Its best-known boot is the Hi-Top Chukka, the "Playboy", with a thick crepe sole and a Goodyear welt, worn by Steve McQueen in Bullitt.
