Shoes Like Pottery is a Japanese canvas footwear label made in Kurume, Fukuoka. The name comes from how the shoes are finished. Using the vulcanising method, known as ka-ryu, each shoe goes into a kiln, where the sulphur mixed into the raw rubber reacts and leaves a soft, flexible, durable sole. Only a handful of makers still work this way. The look is classic and minimal, with a signature blue sole and a rubber seal bearing the brand logo, embossed one at a time by the maker. The uppers are textured fabric, hand-sewn by skilled craftspeople. It suits anyone who likes simple shoes where the construction does the talking.
