Sun Surf

Sun Surf is a Japanese label that reproduces vintage Aloha shirts, and it has been at it since the 1970s. It sits in the Toyo Enterprise family, alongside Sugar Cane and Whitesville. The starting point was an obsession with old shirting, and the brand still draws on a large archive of original garments, studying the cut, fabric, print, colour, collar spread and even the buttons. Shirts are made in Japan from custom fine filament rayons and slubby cotton-linen yarns, chosen to match the cool touch and fluid drape of the mid-century originals. Prints often use traditional discharge printing, which removes or replaces the cloth's dye instead of sitting thick ink on top, so the design feels part of the fabric. The fit is relaxed, and the graphics are big and detailed.
